Why a Neurodiverse Approach to Forklift Licence Refreshers Is Essential
-
Forklift operation requires sharp spatial awareness, fast decision-making, and the ability to manage sensory input - all areas where neurodivergent workers may experience challenges or exceptional strengths, depending on how they are supported. For example, a driver with ADHD may hyperfocus on a task but struggle with sudden changes in environment or unexpected instructions. Without tailored training, this can lead to safety lapses.
In recent years, real-life incidents have highlighted the consequences of missed neurodiverse training approaches. In one UK warehouse, a forklift operator with undiagnosed dyslexia misread a reversed loading diagram, resulting in a 2-tonne load falling and injuring a colleague. In another case, a dyspraxic driver in the Netherlands, unaware of their sensory processing challenges, failed to notice a reversing warning alarm - leading to a near-fatal collision.
These are not isolated events - they reveal a systemic oversight: that standardised refresher training doesn’t work for everyone. It assumes uniform learning styles, attention spans, and memory processing, when in reality, every driver brings a different neurological makeup to the role.
Let’s stay ahead of the game, we’re all on it anyway!

At Spectrum, we believe in training that works with the brain - not against it. Our neurodiverse forklift licence refreshers aren’t just about ticking compliance boxes. They’re about optimising safety and potential. By tailoring content delivery, instruction pacing, and communication styles to suit different cognitive profiles, we help operators understand how their brains work best.
For example, we support ADHD drivers to build effective distraction-minimising strategies during operation (like audio-visual alerts or pre-operation checklists). We show dyslexic drivers how to decode signage and documentation through visual-spatial aids rather than relying on dense text. Dyspraxic workers benefit from physical workspace adjustments and kinaesthetic learning tools that improve muscle memory and precision.
Importantly, we also focus on identifying and leveraging strengths - such as pattern recognition, long-term memory, and hyperfocus - which are common in neurodivergent individuals. A forklift operator who can spot subtle changes in loading patterns or anticipate spatial collisions due to heightened environmental scanning is not just safe - they’re an asset to any team

Accidents involving forklifts often lead to costly insurance claims, increased premiums, or even denied coverage - especially if investigations reveal gaps in training or inadequate employee support. Neurodivergent individuals may be more vulnerable to miscommunication, sensory overwhelm, or fatigue-related errors if their needs aren't addressed.
How Spectrum helps: By incorporating neurodiversity-aware training and conducting neuro-friendly workplace assessments, companies significantly lower the risk of accidents and demonstrate a proactive duty of care. This not only reduces the number of claims but can also result in lower liability insurance premiums, as insurers increasingly reward businesses that invest in robust safety and inclusion measures.
Essentially: Fewer incidents = lower costs, stronger compliance, and better coverage.
-
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines are increasingly recognising the importance of inclusive practices. Meanwhile, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) is no longer a "nice-to-have" - it's a business imperative.
How Spectrum helps: We future-proof your business by integrating neurodiversity awareness into health & safety training, site assessments, and internal culture. This ensures legal compliance and shows stakeholders you’re committed to inclusive, safe workplaces.Compliance + Culture: Meet the latest standards while building a workplace that supports everyone.
-
A single preventable safety incident involving a forklift can damage a company’s reputation, attract scrutiny from regulators, and reduce trust among clients and employees.
How Spectrum helps: Our proactive, neuro-inclusive approach to risk management helps companies demonstrate care, foresight, and responsibility - qualities that matter deeply to today’s socially conscious clients and partners.Brand value: Leaders in inclusion are leaders in industry - and your company’s reputation reflects that.
In high-risk environments like warehouses, construction sites, and logistics hubs, forklift drivers play a vital role in the smooth and safe functioning of day-to-day operations. But when licences are not refreshed with an understanding of neurodiversity, companies miss a critical layer of safety and efficiency. Traditional refresher training often overlooks the unique ways neurodivergent individuals (such as those with ADHD, AuDHD, dyslexia, or dyspraxia) process information, respond to stimuli, and manage focus and stress. This gap can not only hinder performance but also increase the risk of serious accidents.

Daniel
Hi, I have worked as a forklift driver for 20 years in many different warehouse and logistics environments. I'm now qualified as an RTITB instructor, having worked for one of the biggest, most successful companies in the world. I have a solid understanding of what your drivers need, ensuring I get them working at optimal level.
Having adhd myself, I understand how dangerous it can be to navigate a forklift in a neuro-unfriendly environment. Not only that, it is extremely unsafe to operate a forklift without any deeper understanding of what neurodiversity is, what specific type of neurodivergency you have and the strategies/techniques that are needed to mitigate any potential tragedies. I roll out training, on behalf of Spectrum, to make sure all drivers understand the importance of safety on the forklift as well as ensuring they keep up with relevant societal changes that need to be incorporated, such as the rise of neurodivergent workers.
Common things that drivers tend to lose knowledge of during their forklift careers:
1. Understanding load centres
2. Unpredictable forklift behaviors
Key Benefits of My Refresher Training:
1. Improve your Company's Liability Insurance.
2. Employee Satisfaction
3. Improves Brand Reputation
4. I have the benefit of hearing workers likes and dislikes towards the company's procedures, away from the management they work with
Due to my straight-forward, direct but understanding approach, drivers respond to my approach positively while making sure key elements of forklift safety is known.
